This is a hand-painted film from the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. Painted birds and animals move through painted landscapes. The animation techniques are a combination of the very old (individually rendered cels) and the very new (brushstrokes digitally animated). The Bear River winds its way from the peaks of the high Sierra, through canyons to the Pacific Ocean. The film is about the last wild six mile stretch of the river, which is under threat by a local dam project. The film is an artist’s response to this beautiful place, and is dedicated to all who strive to protect the remaining wild places of our world. I spent many glorious days this year on the river, painting it in its different moods. The song was written by a river guide.
