“Zap On ” is an experimental film made by Colorado artist and filmmaker John Dawson in 2024. This short film is 100% hand made by drawing, painting and scratching directly onto 16mm film stock. It is paint with a pulse and abstraction that moves. I am taking an old school technique and trying to do something modern and current. My films are all about the colors, motion and having fun! I hope people are entertained and energized by all of my films. You can think of it like a ride at the amusement park or view it the same way you might view fireworks or abstract painting. The films I make are designed to bridge all language and cultural barriers and are 100% universal. The music is by Monument Music from pixabay.com. "Microcosmos" is a recent study involving frame-by-frame improvised gestural expressions created with my daughters handprints. Throughout the animation development process, these printed images depict multiple directional movements that may resemble not only personal hand gestures, but also silhouettes and patterns reminiscent of our daily landscapes. This transformation of a child's handprints into animated visual symbols aims to bring to life the personal memories associated with my daughter while growing from infant to a teenager, much in the same way that individuals left their handprints on cave walls in prehistoric times.
In an isolated prairie home, a young girl shoulders the burden of caring for her three siblings and navigating a dysfunctional relationship with their mother. When the mother mysteriously transforms into a bird and abandons her children, this resilient eldest sister struggles to maintain their isolated existence. As the siblings, one by one, undergo a metamorphosis into animals and forsake her for the enchanting forest, she faces a poignant choice: embrace her own transformation and join them in the vast wilderness of their home or defy fate, embracing her scarred humanity, and venture into the towns and cities of the world to forge her own destiny.
